Have you ever had to hire
a contractor before? Was it as bad of an experience for you as it was for me?
A drunken driver drove his car into my house two years ago. That’s right,
right into my living room in the middle of the night. I’m sure you won’t be
surprised when I tell you he was uninsured. Sure glad I had home and car
insurance to cover uninsured motorists.
After fighting with the insurance company for over a year because they only
wanted to pay a fraction of the cost that three contractors told them and us
it would cost, they finally settled and paid said sum to the lowest bidder.
It took over a year for the low bid contractors to finish half of the work.
Everything they did do had to be redone at least once. If it started to
sprinkle their day was over and they would leave. Not just for the day mind
you, but for weeks on end. I’d been pushed back behind every job they got
since mine and the story goes on and go. My husband and I were at our wits end
and had grown accustomed to the unsightly mess in the front of our house.
Until the building inspector showed up and wanted to know why the job hadn’t
been completed and informed us that what was done wouldn’t pass inspection. By
this time we had given the contractors all the money the insurance was going
to pay out.
A Happy Ending- I was fortunate enough to have
joined a group of small business’ called Wausau Business Network. One of the
members was a general contractor by the name of Gary Spleha. I was leery of
this man just because of his profession and knew they must all be alike. As
relationships grow so does trust, so after one of the meetings I invited Gary
the owner of A to Z remodeling to come over and take a look at my
devastation. He kindly agreed and later that evening he pulled
up to our driveway. Later that week we were given a quote and much to our
dismay it was going to cost as much to do every over as it did the first time
around. The estimate was put on the back burner and immediately on my wish
list. A couple of months went by and again I get a phone call from Gary
asking if we wanted him to do the job. Later I’d reply, when my husband
returns to work and we save up some money. Then comes the inspector who
insisted we have something finished whether the money was on hand or not.
Still not trusting anyone else to take our hard earned money, we pushed the
project back even a little further on the burner. Another call from Gary and
I knew there was no more putting him off. The inspector was on our case and
now the contractor wanted an answer and the state insisted it get finished
before the first snow! A deposit was paid and the very next day the work
began. I had a crew of three men in my front yard everyday! This won’t last I
thought to myself. Tomorrow it will rain and they will head for shelter
somewhere far far away. The next day came and it did start to rain but instead
of fleeing, they put on their hoods and kept working! They have gotten more
done in one week than the other construction company did in over nine months!
A to Z was hired just to side the front of the house and to stabilize the new
deck so it would pass inspection. Someday we would want them to side the rest
of the house so it would match the new garage built three years ago. When
Gary pressed me on giving him an answer as to whether or not we wanted him to
side the whole house I was forced to humble myself and let him know that we
wanted him to do it, but one side at a time, as we had the money. He went home
that day and had a conversation with his wife. He returned to inform me that
they would be siding my whole house and would give us time to pay it off!
It’s such a professional job that I keep walking outside to look and admire
it, and then I spot it! He has added some extra detail that just about takes
my breath away. Thank you Gary for renewing my faith in a field that had only
robbed from us. The house is stunning and more beautiful than I dreamt it
would be! You and your crew have been professional, clean, polite, on time and
keep coming back! You are an inspiration to all businesses in Wausau!
